TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

Trigger points are crystals that are formed within the body’s soft tissue. These crystals comprise of metabolic wastes and often result in sore and aching muscles.

Trigger Point Therapy, involves applying direct pressure to release these painful spots within the muscles. Releasing active trigger points allow for pain-free muscle movement  and restores soft tissue function.

Trigger Point Therapy

An active trigger point creates pain in the localised area as well as referring to other areas of the body. A passive trigger point lies dormant within the muscle until activated by chemical, thermal or mechanical factors.

Activation of trigger points may occur from over or under-use of muscles; injury; hormonal changes; stress; temperature; atmospheric changes; and neurological factors; hydration and nutrition.

When a trigger point is activated, the nerve impulses to the muscle fibres do not switch off as they are meant to. This over-stimulation creates the nagging continuous pain.

The treatment applies direct pressure to trigger points in order to switch off the pain signals that are sent from the nerve fibres.

Trigger point therapy increases circulation to the affected tissue region helping to release metabolic wastes and alleviate pain. Treatment also involves guided breathing techniques to induce muscle relaxation, specific stretches and application of ice.
